Selling with PFK

  General

Penrith Farmers and Kidd’s have a growing reputation for the quality of our sales - over the last 5 years, catalogue sales which started at an initial £94,000 in late 1998 have regularly totalled over £200,000. We have a reputation for honesty and integrity in both our dealings with vendors and our catalogue descriptions. Most lots are not only illustrated in full colour in the catalogue, but appear on no less than five internet websites including the main collectors and trade sites, Invaluable and Antiques Trade Gazette, ensuring blanket coverage. Catalogue sales are advertised locally in five newspapers as well as with a full page in the national trade newspaper, the Antiques Trade Gazette.

 Valuation for Sale

As mentioned elsewhere (see “Valuation Services” page), we are pleased to offer free verbal or written appraisals for sale, from a single item to an entire house clearance. Please contact us by telephone, fax or e-mail to arrange an appointment at the Saleroom or in your own home.

 Commission Rates

We offer most competitive rates for vendors in our quarterly catalogues sales, in order to encourage the consignment of quality items at sensible reserves. Our standard commission rate is 15% plus VAT (17.63% inclusive) - although for larger collections and higher value items, we may be prepared to negotiate preferential terms. We do offer discounted rates for trade entries, and welcome the opportunity to do business, but respectfully request that such consignments be “discreet” (i.e. preferably not offered or seen widely before), and reserves should be sensible to facilitate attractive estimates.

Unlike many auction houses, we do not make percentage charges for storage and insurance, and have recently introduced a standard lot fee covering storage, insurance, colour photography (where appropriate, in the catalogue and on the five websites) at just £5 per lot - previously, photography alone was £10 per lot. We believe this package offers exceptional value for money.

 Reserves

The fixing of a reserve price is entirely optional, and is agreed between the vendor and ourselves at a level which is mutually acceptable. Once the catalogue is printed (with estimates), the reserve cannot be increased. We can apply a 10% “auctioneer’s discretion” beneath a reserve if so instructed, but most reserves are firmly fixed. If no reserve is required, we will provide an estimate which we believe can be achieved or bettered.

 Pre-sale Information

Catalogue sale vendors receive a complimentary catalogue containing their pre-sale advice statement. This details lot numbers and estimates (or reserves if applicable). Directions, viewing times and selling rates (typically 150 lots per hour) are indicated in the catalogue.

 Post-sale Information

Vendors receive a statement and a cheque for the balance after each sale - typically within one week for fortnightly sales, and three weeks for antique sales (to allow for postage requests and international payments).
